It’s been hot n’ horrendous out on The BVG! The balcony’s eastern exposure ensures that the vegies, herbs and flowers are sun drenched for a good six hours daily. This past week, with temps climbing into the ugly zone, the vegies have had an unquenchable thirst for rain that teases us, but doesn’t seem to fall. So I’ve become a one-woman watering can brigade, on a mission to save the plant life! If there’s an upside to this scorching weather, it is that we’ve been rewarded with vegies and vines that have shot up madly: zucchini and beans climbing and winding around anything within reach; cucumbers nearly ready for picking; tomatoes and peppers getting all plump-ish and lush. This weekend I’ll be looking for ways to create shade, and give these babies a much-needed break from the rays.

Other high points? I’ve created two new salads in the catering kitchen this week that promise to get local taste buds jazzed. Arugula and baby spinach paired with crisp, shredded beets, feta and walnuts, drizzled with balsamic vinaigrette. And a brown basmati rice salad, with sweet peppers, shredded carrots, raisins and cucumber, topped with marinated, ginger tofu in a coconut-red curry dressing. Instagram shots coming your way next week. Ooooo Errrrr, hang on to your appetites!!

Low point? A late-night, emergency Vet visit to the tune of 400 (ooof!) dollars … and one unhappy cat (and owner.) Ms. Denver Colorado (the scrappy feline) is still recovering, 24 hours later, from drugs that have left her strung out and staring at shadows on the wall …

Ok. The weekend is upon us, and I am so looking forward to catching more than six hours sleep, spending time with the kids, saying sweet goodbyes to Number One as she jets off to L.A. and doing a lot of nothing at all.

Happy weekending, friends! May your ‘nothing at all’ be wonderful …
