creative space: heather alexander

My long-time friend, Heather Alexander, is an artist who continually inspires me to lead a more fully engaged, creative life. She leaves an artistic imprint on everything she touches: her home, her garden, and of course, her little studio. I’ll never forget the afternoon I walked into her current space. Wherever I looked, from each shelf to every wall, there was beauty and whimsy waiting to be discovered in even the smallest details.

Heather has a knack for continually refreshing and revitalizing a space simply by rearranging artwork and furniture. There’s a quiet consideration to her approach, a reverence for the subtly and beauty of seemingly ordinary details. And as a fellow gardener, I’m always awestruck by her ability to design not just beds, but garden “rooms” that beckon visitors into a serene and private world. She’s one of my favourite thrifting companions. And easily the most dangerous one. I’ve stopped telling my kids I’m “just going for coffee” with her. Our so-called coffee dates generally turn into day-long coffee/book store/thrifting extravaganzas.

These are some of the details that make Heather’s space uniquely, thoughtfully, hers. Using vintage, clip-on earrings to hold artwork and cards? Bobbly genius, I say!
