hello, July

I awoke this morning feeling rested. Rested! What an incredible and uncommon feeling. Something that I haven’t experienced for a very long time given late night creative stints and early morning restaurant starts. Number Four said the same thing (about himself, natch) and so we toasted our no-school-no-work day with strawberries, French Toast and bacon for him, and heaps of fresh fruit and coffee for me. This, on the tail of a long weekend. My girls were celebrating Pride weekend in Toronto, while the boys and I were mustering up enthusiasm for Canada Day fireworks … and sweaters in July. What an odd way to ring in what has always been a sultry, summer night! But cool it was—umbrellas and blankets to boot—and not a mosquito in sight.

Yesterday, thanks to the kindness of neighbours, I amassed a bounty of roses that makes my breath catch each time I look at them. The blush pink tea roses have the most ethereal scent. Grey skies on a day off have no hold on me now!

What’s been making your heart happy lately?
